LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz.—Nov. 30, 2018—Horizon Community Bank today announced it has upgraded its website to ensure it’s accessible to people with disabilities, passing a certification process to meet standards published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) earlier this year. Called Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, the accessibility guidelines include adaptations such as video captions for those with poor vision, keyboard-based navigation for those unable to use a mouse, text alternatives for images that are compatible with text-to-speech software, color palette changes to make links and navigation easier for color-blind individuals to navigate, and other modifications intended to accommodate disabilities without compromising overall usability of the website.

“Everyone has a reasonable expectation of being able to find and understand information on the Internet, regardless of their physical limitations. Whether they have vision or hearing issues, a learning disability, limited movement or some other challenge, they should be able to access the same information that a non-disabled person can access,” says Jerry Ernst, president and chief operating officer of Horizon Community Bank. “From a business perspective, it’s just the right thing to do. We’re proud to have made this change long before most other businesses. It underscores our commitment to the community and its residents.”

Passed in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensured public spaces were easily accessible to those with disabilities, but applying those standards to the Internet has been a much more complex process. Federal, state and local government websites were required to make the shift by January 18, 2018, but the business world has been slower to adapt, likely due to a lack of federal law to force the process, a lack of resources for smaller businesses and the expense involved in making a website compliant.
